Worries seem miles away while wandering along Delaware’s scenic outdoor trails, whether it’s in the rolling hills of the Brandywine Valley or along the seashore of Delaware’s pristine Atlantic coast. So lace up those hiking boots, get off the beaten path, and explore some of the state’s most extraordinary outdoor trails.
Auburn Valley Trail at Auburn Valley State Park Enjoy gorgeous views of the Red Clay Creek, rolling meadows and leafy Auburn Valley along this 1.3-mile trail tucked along the state’s northern border. Find the trailhead just off of Benge Road.
Mt. Cuba Dogwood Path One of five paths, the Dogwood Path leads you along the outskirts of Mt. Cuba's lovely native gardens where you can admire not only dogwoods, but dozens of plant species. The path takes you past a large pond where like lily pads thrive. Keep an eye out for frogs that call the pond home.
Pomeroy and Newark Rail Trail/Creek Road Trail The 4.4-mile trail through the town of Newark is popular with runners and bikers, but also features an offshoot, the Creek Road Trail, at its western end that follows the beautiful White Clay Creek. Creek Road Trail can be found at the far northern end of North College Avenue.
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge There are five trails to choose from at this riverside refuge, but be sure to check out the quarter-mile Boardwalk Trail, which winds through forest and marsh and offers a stunning view of the wetlands teeming with birds.
Killens Pond State Park Loop Trail This 66-acre tree-rimmed pond is encircled by a 2.6-mile trail that crosses creeks and winds through campsites, offering great views of the water and the surrounding hardwood forest. Feel free to bring your furry friends along for the adventure - leashed dogs are welcome.
Walking Dunes Trail at Cape Henlopen State Park Delaware’s most majestic sights are all here at this easy 2.5-mile trail winding through wooded uplands and tidal marsh before ending at The Great Dune. Access the trailhead at the Herring Point parking lot.
Loblolly Trail at Trap Pond State Park There’s no landscape quite like it in Delaware: Towering bald cypress trees, hardwood forest, a historic cemetery and scenic lowlands, all included in this 5-mile trail that loops around Trap Pond State Park. It's also a great spot for fishing and camping.
Prickly Pear Trail at Delaware Seashore State Park Located in this oceanside park’s Fresh Pond area, the Prickly Pear trail runs for 3.5 miles through forest and open meadows, giving trekkers a rare view of Indian River Bay at Beach Cove. Begin at the trailhead on Hickman Road in Ocean View.
